Synopsis

What could a polydactyl cat add to the Swinging Tails band? Bongos, of course! Jack moves from Key West to Little Honker’s neighborhood and discovers his love of music can continue when the Tails invite him to join their band. The band gives a paw-some dream performance during the Independence Day celebration and then an unusual flare makes this celebration a day never to be forgotten.

Author Biography

When my first Siamese cat gave birth to six kittens on my bed, my appreciation for differences and the love of cats started. Cats and students have been a big part of my life for fifty years. Creative Writing was among the high school English courses I taught over my forty years in the classroom. I always wrote with my students. It provided me with knowledge of the assignment and led me down my own path of discovery. After retirement I was able to follow my passion of writing for young readers. I enjoy reading my books in elementary school classrooms and talking to my audience. They always provide me with amazing ideas and I have been able to use some of them to create new stories. I live in Colorado with my husband and one senior cat. I also enjoy being an active grandmother.

Author Insight

I Did It!

Writing is something I've done for as long as I can remember. Sharing it with others, not a chance for a very long time. That is until Bill Kloefkorn, my favorite college professor, said I should submit my short story to the literary magazine. What? He read it. He liked it enough to want other people to read it. Wow! I couldn't believe it. Maybe I actually had a bit of talent after all. Just as he encouraged me, I made it my mission to encourage my students. Every kid has a story. I continued to write with my students and after I retired, I was able to follow my life-long dream. Always, I remember the faith Bill Kloefkorn had in me. He believed in me. When someone has faith in you, amazing things can be created. In this passage, the Independence Day committee had faith in Little Honker and the Swinging Tails! Amazing things did happen. .

Little Honker's Patriotic Paws

“They did it!” shouted the girls together.

“I guess the DJ was right—and Warren’s mom, Bernice-- who told Warren that everyone is important in his or her own way. This band is more than important,” said Kari. “It’s fantastic. The fantastic felines -- plus a skunk!”

“Let’s go tell the Tails the good news,” said Kris.

As the girls entered the jam session, they interrupted the Tails playing “Patriotic Paws.”

“You sound awesome,” said Kris. “And, we have some awesome news.”

“Keep up the good work because the Swinging Tails have won the music contest for the Greenwood Independence Day Celebration. You all have been invited to play at the Independence Day Concert,” announced Kari.

Loud honks from Warren and meows from the other felines were heard from every corner of the practice room. Even Weezie mewed in her skunk voice and joined in as they all began jumping and giving high paws to each other.
