When Kari and Kris are not in school, they enjoy playing with Bernice and Bernard. They also enjoy cuddling with them while they are studying or watching television.
This seemed to be the daily routine for both the girls and the cats. Everyone was content.
But then a change occurred. Bernice started to act differently. She was meowing more. She was eating more. She was getting a round tummy.
Finally Kari said, “I think Bernice is going to have kittens.”
“I think you’re right,” said Kris. “Let’s talk to Dad.”
The human and feline families lived next to the Animal Clinic where Kari and Kris’s dad worked as a veterinarian. He took care of all kinds of animals. Now it was time for him to take care of Bernice.
The girls scooped up Bernice and carried her out to see their dad. “Dad, we think Bernice is going to have babies,” said Kari.
“She’s eating more and her tummy is rounder,” Kris said. “Also, she doesn’t seem like her usual self.”
“Let’s look at her in the exam room,” said Dad.
The girls took Bernice to the exam room and placed her on the table. Their dad felt her tummy and after he had completed a full examination, he said, “I do believe there will be an increase in the feline population.”
