The next morning Doc walked out of his front door, looked over his yard as usual and discovered an enormous mess in the back corner. His trash can was on its side and the contents were spread around the yard. Used napkins, chicken bones, empty soup cans, meat wrappers, and more decorated his yard. Even his re-cycle bin had been dumped over and there were plastic and glass bottles as well as aluminum cans scattered around his yard. Fortunately his compost container was intact.
“How did this happen?” Doc said out loud. “There was not a storm last night. I think I would have awakened. I did not hear Duchess bark. I can’t figure this out. Unless . . .unless. . . some creature got into the yard and none of us heard it.” Doc was once again talking through a problem situation.
Doc started to pick up the yard. As he was putting the trash back into the can, Duchess came out from under the porch.
“Duchess, did you hear any noise last night? Why is there trash all over my yard?”
Duchess looked at Doc, barked, and walked over to a soup can. She put it in her mouth and handed it to Doc.
“Thanks Duchess. You are a great helper. I just wish you had seen who did this last night.”
Soon Margie was on the scene. She did not like messes! She took one look at Doc’s yard and got to work helping Doc and Duchess. Her new glasses helped her to spot things more quickly. She picked up the used napkins and meat containers with her little skunk hands and gave them to Doc. She also picked up a few cans and put them in the trash can. Having things in order was extremely important to Margie.
