Selina
Hearty food and hearty souls gathered for the Sunday dinner at Carlos Andrade’s home, including a new and mysterious guest. As host, Andrade introduced people, guided the conversation, and concluded business transactions so casually that guests felt they were there solely for the meal. As she substituted for her mother, Selina recognized the irony of hosting dinners in the house her mom grew up in without her.
Her mother’s age at marriage had been a decade younger than her father’s. The thought occurred to Selina that maybe her parents initially encountered each other in that very dining room during her mother’s younger years. Upon her eighteenth birthday, Selina’s mother had already moved to California with her ambitious husband and given birth to Jake and Selina. The Fuentes Coffee business, founded by Mama’s father, was now run by her husband, Carlos Andrade. What did Papa recall when he noticed his daughter sitting at the table in Mama’s place?
