She watched as he closed his phone and walked back toward the barn. She knew he got cell service in that clearing by the creek.
"He wants to bring his wife up here," he said as he walked through the door.
"His wife, he wants to bring her up here."
"I expected that but it won't be a problem."
"I felt better with her being on the other end of the country. If he starts singing to her she could sing to her father. I don't want that bastard on our tail. He'll get to the diamond before any of us, trust me."
"She's not going to say anything to her father, she can barely stand him. Besides, if Devon got wind of it, he'd think it was a hoax. If Devon knew we were all up here chasing the Eagle Diamond he'd laugh his head off."
"Do you really think we need Brock at all, you don't think we could do this alone?"
"We had to feed Brock that bullshit story. Peter was going to send him here and without that bullshit story we'd be competing with Brock for the diamond. We had to be prepared. Anyway, Brock will assure that nothing goes wrong without even realizing what he's doing. He won't say a thing to Jane about anything either. He believed you are an FBI agent. In any event, he’ll keep all the vultures at bay. By the time he realizes he's been duped, we're long gone."
"I guess he's feeding us information we couldn't necessarily get on our own. I mean he’s doing all the legwork for us, isn’t he?"
"I told you he would serve a very important purpose. I told LaPorte to send him to Longfellow. If anyone can get their hands on that clock, he can."
“I wish I knew where the hell it was.”
“I have a feeling Eleanor might be able to tell us.”
“I doubt if she knows where it is. If she did she would have taken it apart.” He laughed. “Boom! I wonder if she knows it’s rigged.”
“LaPorte told me Andy would know where the clock is. He told me Brenda was after the diamond. He’s been very useful, darling.”
"How many people you think are after this diamond?"
"Well, at least three." She looked at him and smiled. "Brock will make sure they never get their hands on it, and as long as he thinks he's working for the FBI, he won't touch it either."
He smiled. "Pretty brilliant plan. But what makes you so sure that LaPorte won’t steal the diamond and take off? I hear he grew up with Longfellow. Maybe those two have a plan."
"He isn’t one of us, he couldn’t pass it," she said. “And besides, we made a deal with LaPorte, he’ll be a rich man because he chose to work with me and not my husband.”
