Proverbs 4:20-23
“My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings. Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh. Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard for out of it flow the springs of life.”
These words were penned by Solomon, but of course we know they are God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16). God will give you wisdom if you only ask Him (James 1:5). Remember, wisdom was the thing Solomon asked the Lord for when the Lord invited him to ask for whatever he wanted (2 Chronicles 1:10). Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines wisdom as the right use or exercise of knowledge; the choice of laudable ends, and of the best means to accomplish them. However, Proverbs 9:10 says the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Therefore, we would be wise to follow the advice given in this proverb. It tells us there is healing and health in the words of the Lord for those who find it, attend to it, consent, and submit to it. To attend to something means to pay attention to, take seriously, or keep in mind. To consent to something means to be agreement with or give permission to. To submit means to yield to the authority of. So this verse is telling us to take seriously the words written therein, agree with them, and yield to their authority. This is wisdom at its finest. Wisdom is a wonderful teacher, if you will listen to her. Proverbs 3:18 says, “Wisdom is a tree of life to those who eat her fruit; happy is the man who keeps on eating it.” It seems the more we grow the more we know; however, that is not always the case. What we know can in many cases be absolutely positively useless to us and to others! Sadly there are some well advanced in years that still lead a life full of folly and foolishness because they refuse to accept teaching and advice from those who know better than they do – following and living the truth. We can learn from a 3 year-old if we will take the time to listen. God will use whomever He chooses to get His message across. Listening - not just hearing - is key to learning and growing, and listening, learning, and growing is key to obtaining wisdom. Wisdom comes in many forms from many different sources, the Greatest of all being God Himself. Take the time to listen to and learn from the wise. It will ultimately be a key factor in your life, assisting in keeping you out of trouble! So, regarding health, the words of the Lord are like preventive medicine. A dose a day keeps sickness away!
