Waking yourself up with a phone alarm to nurse your baby does not provide anywhere near the same motivation as having a crying baby wake you from sleep. On at least two occasions while staying at the hospital, I slept through my alarm and woke to the phone in the room ringing. It would be the NICU nurse calling to ask, “Are you coming to feed him, or should we just go ahead and give him a bottle?”
Give him a bottle? They know he is a breastfed baby, and I have strictly asked them not to give him a bottle! What is she thinking!? This was enough to have me flying out of that bed, half asleep with my hair a mess and my pupils still trying to focus in the fluorescent lighting. Thinking back, she may have known that was exactly the motivation I needed to get my butt down there because my baby was hungry!
Thank You, God, for Your grace.
