A few minutes later, the nurse returned with someone from the NICU. He explained the baby was born with aortic stenosis; the valve was too small, and he gave us the impression that it would require open heart surgery. Then he apologized and said, “I thought we were further along in the process than we are. I thought the pediatrician had explained everything to you. I’m sorry, the transport team is here to pick him up.”
I interrupted, “Wait! What? Are you telling me they are here to take him … now?”
“The transport team is in the hallway,” he said matter-of-factly. “We will give you ten minutes to say goodbye.” He turned and left the room.
