The blackness swallowed the group as they kept slowly moving through the thick woods. Even though they were only a few feet apart as they walked, it was difficult to see more than an outline of each other. Bits of moonlight scattered high through the tree branches, allowed the group to pick their way slowly up the hill.
The mountain was steep, and Emma soon found herself breathing hard. Her thigh muscles burned with every step. Max was still holding her hand and Emma used it to help her keep hiking forward. Emma could hear Brody breathing, but he did not sound winded. “How are you not breathing hard?” she asked.
“All those hurdle workouts with Coach Nick,” he replied. Brody had run hurdles for the Diamond Falls Youth Track and Field Club since he was nine years old. He was in great shape because of all of his years of training.
