Emma and Brody jumped to attention joining Rusher at the window. Max finally coaxed Aspen awake and waited at the door.
“How do we get out of there without them seeing us?”
Emma could feel her heart beating faster and faster with every step the miners took closer to the cabin. She looked to Rusher hoping he had a plan.
“Distraction,” Rusher said as he crouched with his hands on his knees. “On the count of three, you guys run out of the cabin and straight to the woods. Run about thirty feet in and find the thickest clump of bushes where you can and hide. Don’t turn around no matter what you hear. I’m going to distract the men and then I’ll come find you. You’ll know it’s safe to come out if you hear me say ‘firefly’. Got it?”
“Got it,” the kids said in unison.
“Keep Aspen close to you. Dogs aren’t too common around here. Especially Samoyeds.”
“Okay, we got this,” Emma said nodding. Her heart was racing at warp speed.
Rusher placed his hand on the doorknob as the kids and Aspen readied themselves to run. Max held Aspen’s collar. “It’s time to run girl.”
“One...Two...THREE!”
