Brody and Emma trailed behind them stopping to examine the start line drawn across the street in chalk. The line was divided into ten equal squares with the numbers one through ten written inside each box reaching from one sidewalk to the opposite side of the road. Orange tape wrapped around a series of wooden posts outlined the harnessing area for the goats and the racers. The harnessing area was approximately twenty feet behind the start line and the holding pen for the extra goats was another thirty feet away. The goats wandered through the pen bleating their disapproval.
“I don’t think these goats want to be locked up. They’re loud,” Emma commented making Brody chuckle.
Emma saw the sign-up table near the holding pen and went to check in while Brody searched for the girls and Aspen. A plump woman at the table gave her a race number to pin onto her shirt.
“You are in heat number three and you line up in box number six.”
“Thank you.”
“Stay close and someone will take your heat to the pen to pick out your goat soon.”
