My face exploded and I laughed my head off. I clung to the railing to keep from falling over. He grinned widely to see such a turnaround. “Didn’t see that one coming!” I choked out. He made the game double-time. Red lines zipped across the screen and regions turned dark red, then black.
A wave of murkiness overcame me. It was dark. I couldn’t breathe. I was wet. A tank. They were shoving my head into a tank. Of water. My heart pounded, starving for air. Red. Red around my face. They pulled me up. Air. By the hair. Gasping. Water. Red. Running down my face. Gasping for air. Water. Underwater. Couldn’t breathe. Screaming. Up again. Screaming. High.
A young boy. Screaming. In a cave. Dark. A tank of water. Guards. Yelling.
Tell us what you know. Tell us right now.
A young boy screaming in a dark cave. Guards. A water tank. Couldn’t breathe.
Raven.
“Emma! Emma! Hey! Snap out of it! Emma!”
I was crumpled against the vine column when my eyes refocused. Tracer was shaking my shoulder, his expression one of terror. His touch was delicate enough to suggest that he was afraid I might crumple like a rose petal underneath it.
Heat surged up my face. That was before I saw the faces crowding the window.
