Ty and Jeffrey walked into the morgue anteroom. Above the door, Jeffrey read, “Hic locus est ubi mors gaudet succurrere vitae.” He recognized the Latin phrase, “This is the place where death rejoices to help those who live.”
They donned the blue paper surgical gowns, disposable shoe covers, and masks. Jeffrey slipped his plastic protective eyewear over his glasses. They opened the door to the autopsy suite where Dr. Emily Roseman circled Bethany’s bikini clad corpse, still propped into a beach chair. Jeffrey could see her squinting behind her plastic glasses, as if she was mentally planning her every move.
“Good afternoon, gentlemen. It’s so nice to see you again, Captain Corrigan. I really thought I’d have some nice routine cases up here. Get some rest. Do some hiking. Enjoy the beautiful scenery in Upstate New York. Jeffrey, you know the bizarre shit I’ve seen, but I have to tell you, this trumps them all.”
