Tara shuffled to the call room. Her eyes burned, and her legs felt brick heavy. The door was ajar. Edouard sat on the edge of the bed, patting the mattress, beckoning her to sit next to him. The metal frame groaned as she sank into the bed and scooted to his side, too exhausted to cry. She shut her eyes as Edouard placed his hand on her shoulder. The pang in her chest squeezed her hard. She shifted on the bed, pressing against him, praying for comfort that never came.
"I'm so sorry you had such an awful night." He leaned into her and kissed her head. "Happy New Year."
"Shit. It's New Year's Day. I completely forgot."
