My first debt of thanks goes to the people who inspired me to write the stories in this book.
Thanks and gratitude to the many athletes and coaches I value as teammates and instructors over the years– my little league baseball teammates and coaches with Elks 814, the neighborhood boys who always let me play, Pottstown Jr. and Sr. High School coaches and teammates, and my slow pitch softball pals. And thank you to the students and their parents, whom I’ve had the pleasure to coach over the years. Teaching adds a whole new level of learning and the thrill of seeing a student’s improvement matches the thrill of scoring the triangle goal (see chapter 1).
Many stories in the book come from observing professional, Olympic, collegiate and youth athletes to whom I have no real personal connection, but who inspire many, including me. Thank you.
My biggest athletic influences come from my college years at Lafayette College. Ann Gold, the field hockey and lacrosse coach during my tenure there, and the amazing group of women athletes who propelled both teams our senior year to top ten Division I national rankings and a trip to the Final Four in lacrosse. Collectively, they created an atmosphere of competition, growth, and appreciation for life beyond athletics and their influence is felt throughout this book.
The nearest and dearest athletic influences in this book are my kids, their friends and their teammates. They provided many of the insights that sparked the narratives on these pages. Ben, Carly and Jack – thank you for being who you are – with your passion, drive, kindness, support and wisdom – both on and off the athletic field and dance floor, and in and out of the pool.
