the most practical lesson I ever learned, I learned the hard way: don’t lose the ball in the lights. And if you do, don’t try and guess where it will come down. As a Little League centerfielder, I was the only girl in the league and thrilled to make the All-Star team. The All-Star game was the first time I ever played at night under the lights. With a runner on first and one out midway through the game, a high fly ball was hit to shallow centerfield. I rushed in to field it but lost it as it went above the lights. I never found it when it came back out from under the glare of the lights. I missed it. It hit me square in the chest! Red-faced and red-chested, I picked up the ball and threw the runner out at second base.
So what’s the life lesson? Don’t give up, even when you’re embarrassed and in pain.
