The visit ended far too soon for Lady Caroline, but she was so buoyed up in spirits afterward that her aunt took notice. “I hope you have not encouraged that young woman to repeat her visit. She is flighty and indelicate in her speech. I do not consider her to be proper company for you.”
“I am sorry you think so, Aunt. Mrs. Blackwood has been one of my best friends. Her brother is Sir Robert Stafforth, as you know.”
“But she has married beneath herself and disgraced her family.”
“You are mistaken, Aunt! Mr. Blackwood is the son of Sir James Blackwood. He is a friend of Sir Robert who has thoroughly countenanced the marriage. Indeed, I believe Minnie’s mother was quite pleased with the match.”
“Well, some people are easily pleased. I myself should not welcome a newspaperman into my family. If I were your mother, I should forbid you to visit her lest you make the acquaintance of one of her husband’s friends.”
“I have not yet been invited to visit Mrs. Blackwood, but I hope that you will not forbid her to visit me here. My mother did not object to her staying with me after my father’s death.”
“Very well, she may visit you here, but I hope it may not be too often,” conceded Miss Hilliard.
