Synopsis

What will you learn from this book? You will learn to identify a number of plants and animals. You will learn that even deep in the forest half of the species are not native. Recognizing that there is a problem is the first step to solving the problem. Can you identify a basswood or beech? These 3D pictures will help with that identification far more than a 2D picture would. The forest that we will walk in is characteristic of the US north east and Canadian south east. Your best viewing of the 3D pictures is with a colour device and red/blue 3D glasses. However the book is still useable without colour or glasses since every picture is presented also in 2D.

Author Biography

LIFE EXPERIENCES: I live in the forest of Ontario, Canada, on the edge of a lake. I was never able to decide what I wanted to do when I grew up. I have been a skydiver, barefoot water-skier, paramedic, college teacher, software developer, chemist, fisherman, pilot, aircraft builder, and an author. I have flown the plane I built, a two-seater STOL (Short Take Off Landing) aircraft, from coast to coast in Canada. EDUCATION: I studied at Niagara College, Waterloo University, McMaster University, Brock University, and the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. FUTURE PLANS: I am currently working on a novel tentatively called "Robot Wife".

Autumn Beauty

Autumn is a wonderful time of the year if you love to be in the forest. The mosquitos have almost gone. It is not too hot. It is not too cold. Birds have raised their chicks and they are practicing for the big migration. Bears are making their last effort at finding food to turn into fat. Moose, elk, and deer have romance on their minds. And the deciduous trees are putting on their spectacular leaf display as they prepare for winter. Beavers are cutting down trees at a furious rate to get at the limbs, which they bury with the thick end down into the mud underwater for winter snacks. They do not hibernate. My favourite time of the year, but a time for the inexperienced would-be woodsman to be cautious and prepared. This is the time of the year when you can swelter with high temperatures one day and find ice on the water the next. But a walk along a forest road is relatively safe.

This is one of the many roads that criss-cross the American northeast cutting the wilderness into a patch work quilt of small pockets of wildness. Even these pockets are not pristine since most of North America, including this area, has had the trees that existed when the white man arrived cut down long ago and turned into lumber. This area was first cut over 150 years ago. It would take about 800 years to return to a semblance of what existed before the invasion from Europe. It is unlikely that this will happen since the area has been cut twice more since the cutting of the original virgin forest.
