Murray Sims was in his bathroom when he heard the alert he had been waiting for. The massive system in the adjacent room amplified the sound. Is that what I think it is? He lifted his enormous frame off the toilet with the help of a bar installed on the wall. Once upright, he fumbled clumsily as he hauled his pants up and around his seventy-five-inch belly. His excitement at the alert and its promise of treasure made him abandon his attempt to close the zipper. He waddled as fast as his fat body would allow, barely squeezing through the door and back to the systems room.
Come on, baby! He hadn’t even occupied his chair when he reached forward and touched a fat finger against an icon on the screen. The window that opened was like a portal into another technological dimension.
“Yes, there she is!” Murray stuffed the last piece of his chocolate bar into his mouth, plonked his body into his extra-wide seat, then watched the words as they appeared on the screen and copied them into a file.
Dr. Genie Bowman, unaware that she was under his secret surveillance, was typing a report and psychological evaluation of Diana Willis—Alexandra Starnowski.
A flash of triumph raked along Murray’s nerves. How much would Briscane appreciate this find? Murray was about to chortle in satisfaction when another emotion welled within him.
What was it about this name, Alexandra Starnowski, that seemed so familiar?
So familiar, in fact, that it moved him to protect her.
