Morning light poured through the open blinds and warmed Diana’s face, waking her. The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled her nostrils. The sensations were pleasant, comforting. As she gathered her sleepy mind, a sudden thought sliced into her consciousness: You will die before you find the truth.

She bolted upright, cold chills running up her arms and down the back of her neck.

That voice. That warning.

She clutched her throat and realized she wasn’t breathing. Gazing about the bedroom, she saw she was alone. Details about her immediate circumstances coalesced. Gabe Mendoza was also here in the apartment. Deciding that she was safe, Diana relaxed.

But that voice. It had come to her while she was asleep. A dream? Her suspicions told her no. It has to be Briscane.

If that message was meant to scare her, it had done that. But it also advertised danger and kept her senses sharp.

She got up, stepped into the bathroom, and emerged a moment later to slip into jeans, a t-shirt, and a loose blouse. She padded into the living room and found Gabe in a robe, sitting on the sofa, drinking coffee. He had a dazed look, like he didn’t know where he was.

“You doing okay?” she asked.

Gabe shook his head as if to clear away cobwebs. He raised the cup. “Definitely better now that I’m having a decent cup instead of frog water.”

Diana detoured into the kitchen and poured herself a cup, then returned to Gabe. “What’s going on?”

He inhaled deeply and stared at the leaf of steam rising from his coffee. That dazed look returned.

She eased herself beside him. He scooted over to keep their hips from brushing.

“What I mean, Gabe, is that you and I have been through the wringer.”

“Don’t I know it.”

“Why is this happening to us? What’s at play?”
