When you take an action on your behalf or for others, you are an advocate. Advocacy is a combination of vision, mission, and purpose. It’s about planning and then acting to advance an idea and ensure that people’s voices are heard by decision-makers and those who have power.
Advocacy can take many forms, use many approaches, and be informed by many strategies. Your advocacy and organizing can happen online or in person. It can encompass a variety of individual actions, including:
• Writing letters and sending emails
• Asking a question
• Making phone calls
• Instigating legal challenges to laws and policies
• Engaging in social media campaigns, including tweeting
• Donating money
• Lobbying for the passage or reform of laws or policies
• Organizing your neighbors or co-workers
• Participating in street protests
• Making a statement about something that you see as unfair or discriminatory
• Taking action in your everyday life
