“You’re saying you were doomed to become a vampire?”
“That’s what the witch said. So I asked her to end me, but she refused to cut off my head. She told me I needed to make peace with myself.” He reached inside the collar of his T-shirt and pulled out the necklace he wore. A trinket, similar to mine, hung from a gold chain. “She gave me this and told me I could still walk in the light. Being able to see the sun made my misfortune more bearable.”
“W-what did you do after you received it?”
“I saw the world. When I needed to feed, I chose carefully. By never allowing myself to go hungry, I didn’t have to take any lives. I made peace with my condition and found a little joy.”
A little joy?
Was it even possible for me to find tranquility and forget my predicament? How could I put aside all the things I’d wanted and embrace the existence fate had given me?
