Speaking directly to the animal’s mind, I said, “Here, kitty.”
Amber eyes flashed in my direction. Although there was a considerable distance between us, I could hear its thoughts. “What do you want with me, witch?”
“I need you inside that house. I must find an object.”
“What’s in it for me?”
Animals were no different than humans when it came to desires. Both had basic needs in life—food, shelter, and companionship. The cat was in desperate need of all three. It had lived for years outside and was tired of that existence.
“Do this for me, and I’ll make you my own,” I offered. “You’ll have the best of everything. You may come and go as you please.”
The cat purred. “Make me your familiar, witch. If you oblige, I’ll do whatever you ask of me.”
