In Edinburgh, he presents his case to the church's General Assembly, demanding they pay his expenses and restore his position. They decline, and begin an effort to dampen the public relations scandal they blame on Hastie. Like many governing bodies, they appoint a committee. Will the committee resurrect Hastie's reputation, or decide against him?

If the General Assembly thought the Calcutta Scandal would die down after they dismissed me, they were mistaken. The entire missionary enterprise is about to crumble. Donations are down, and the episode is discussed in churches all over Scotland. I’m gratified to find I have many supporters.
The Foreign Mission Committee scrambles to restore their position and decides to send an Investigative Commission to report on the current state of affairs in Calcutta.
