“Has there ever been any impropriety of any description at all between you and Babu Kali Churn Banerjee?”
I look Mr. Trevelyan directly in the eye. “Never at any time. I considered Kali Churn like a son in all my connections.”
“You heard Mr. Hastie’s charge regarding Babu Banerjee. Is there the smallest truth in it?”
“It is the cruelest imputation any man could have made.” I take a deep breath.
“When Babu Kali Churn Banerjee came, were the doors ever closed to the room he was in?”
“The doors are never closed in that house,” I explain. “In my two rooms, the doors were open at all times. During the day the drawing room was partly closed during the Hot Weather, but there was always a door open. There’s a great deal of dust on the road, but after four o’clock, everything was thrown open.”
