I take special care this morning: polish my boots, brush my hair until it crackles before putting it up. My dress is pressed and my fichu white. Today, I testify. There’s no way around it, so I must go through it. Mr. Gasper will find nothing to criticize. No reason to think I’m faint or unsure. I shall stand firm…I hope.
I speak to Mr. Trevelyan before court begins. He tells me to be brave and trust him. He says I must speak out clearly and without hesitation. Unfortunately, I’m not the first witness. First, Kali Churn testifies strongly on my and his own behalf. But by the time Mr. Gasper is through with him, Kali Churn’s testimony doesn’t ring true. It’s too desperate. As Kali Churn leaves the stand, my courage seeps away.
