“The suggestion is that you were on terms of improper intimacy with Miss Pigot. Is that true?”
The color drains from Banerjee’s face. He looks at the floor. “No.”
Justice Norris breaks in. “Babu Banerjee, the suggestion is that at that time and antecedent to that, and subsequently to that, practically the insinuation is, that you had sexual intercourse with Miss Pigot. Is there any truth in that?”
I want to stand up and applaud the judge.
“It is absolutely false,” Babu Banerjee asserts in a clear voice.
“At any time?” Justice Norris asks.
“It is absolutely false for all time,” Babu Banerjee says with a bit more force.
Mr. Trevelyan waits a moment before he resumes. “Miss Gordon says she saw you and Miss Pigot in close conversation, and that she saw you with Miss Pigot while she reclined on a couch. You sat on a chair opposite her with your elbows resting on the couch. Do you remember any such circumstance?”
“I don’t remember the circumstance, but it’s possible.” Babu Banerjee drops his head.
