“My Lord, Mr. Hastie didn’t even arrive in Calcutta until January 1879. Yet without proper warning, he’s dragged up all sorts of matters from the oblivion of the distant past, and Miss Pigot is expected to refute them. Whatever occurred in 1871 has no bearing on events ten years later and may never have occurred at all. Mr. Hastie and his barrister knew their case to be weak.”
Mr. Trevelyan pauses and looks directly at Justice Norris until the judge returns his gaze. “Mr. Fish’s dirty story yesterday was the Defense trump card. It alleged events which have nothing to do with the libels inflicted on Miss Pigot and only serves to deflect the Court’s attention from the libels under consideration.”
Mr. Trevelyan, why won’t you say that Mr. Fish lied? He lied! Lied! Lied! Lied! The word is screaming in my head. Mr. Fish lied.
