After court yesterday, Mr. Gasper expressed concern that things aren’t going as well as they should. He asked me to speak to you about a new witness.”
I swallow. “Surely you don’t think we could lose the case.”
“That’s a risk in any trial, but with a mercurial judge and no jury we face a bigger challenge. A few days ago, I received a note from your colleague Mr. Fish. Mr. Gasper and I think his testimony is just what we need to turn the judge against Miss Pigot.”
I think of my supercilious colleague. “I can’t think of anything he could contribute. If he knew anything of interest he would have told me.”
“That was my opinion until Mr. Gasper and I met with him. Mr. Fish told us he observed shocking behavior between Miss Pigot and Mr. Wilson,” Mr. Geddes says. “Activities so disgusting, his report can’t fail to impress the judge’s mind.”
