“Can you gentlemen guarantee the case will finish by next Friday?” Justice Norris asks. “I want to sum up on Saturday. I won’t allow this case to carry into the vacation and then to December. I could die in the interim. The cost for both sides would be enormous. They’d have to start over.”
“My Lord,” Mr. Gasper says, “I do hope you’ll return to us after the vacation. But the weather outside is ghastly, and the testimony has been lengthy. I simply can’t continue and beg you to adjourn until Monday.”
“Can you guarantee to finish by Friday?” Justice Norris asks.
“It’s impossible to say,” Mr. Gasper responds.
“Then we’ll continue. Call your next witness.”
Outside the rain falls in sheets. I hear a clap of thunder in the distance. The room becomes dimmer. Justice Norris looks up in apprehension but doesn’t change his decision to continue.
