Mr. Trevelyan clears his throat. “To return to Barrackpore Park. Why was it Miss Pigot’s business to attend to the guests?”
“Because the picnic was given to her and the orphans,” Mr. Hastie says regaining his composure.
“You think it improper for a principal guest to devote herself to her host?” Mr. Trevelyan asks.
“It was improper to exclude others.”
“Were you neglected?” Mr. Trevelyan asks in a gentle tone.
“No. She neglected her teachers and the orphans.”
“Couldn’t the orphans run about by themselves?” Justice Norris asks. “There weren’t any tigers or bulls, were there?”
“My Lord,” Mr. Trevelyan says with a slight smile, “there was a tiger once in Barrackpore Park. In a cage. I think it’s been moved to the Calcutta Zoo
