“You don’t know, do you?” Mr. Wilson asks incredulously.
“Know what?”
“Reverend Hastie is interviewing everyone you’ve ever known, as far back as your first employment. Perhaps even further. He’s looking for any mistake or misunderstanding that ever occurred in your life.” Mr. Wilson drops his head. “I’m sorry to be the one telling you this.”
I can’t breathe. The room is completely silent. The sun beats on the shade, revealing dust particles swirling in the light. I sink onto the horsehair sofa. I feel a pain in my head like a knife cutting through it.
Mr. Wilson remains standing. “There’s more. Reverend Hastie’s determined to prove an inappropriate flirtation between you and Babu Banerjee. That way he can punish you both.”
“But, I don’t understand. Kali Churn is a son to me. There’s nothing inappropriate about our relationship.” What is Mr. Wilson talking about?
