There was no persecution, only his informed opinion regarding the facts laid out in the libelous letters. Carruthers tells Hastie to either withdraw his endorsement of the charges of expect a lawsuit. Hastie. Was Hastie surprised by the allegation? Did his heart feel like it dropped into his stomach? “You endorsed the letters as documentary and authenticated evidence. We view this alleged libel as the final step in a systematic persecution of Miss Pigot.”
“Persecution?” I lean forward to make my point. “I merely expressed an informed opinion of the woman.”
Mr. Carruthers continues as if I haven’t spoken. “My client informs me the charges made against her in those letters are untrue and unfounded. Your concurrence with those allegations can only be seen as the product of a deep-seated malice.”
“Poppycock!” I explode. “Her behavior has caught up with her, and she wants someone to blame. Well, she’s looking in the wrong place. I’ve done nothing more than my duty.” I stand. “If that’s all you came for…” I gesture towards the door.
