Still in Edinburgh, Mary thinks he position is secure. She accepted the new conditions, and, to her great relief, Mr. Hastie isn't a member of the Consulting Committee. While Mary prepares for her return to Calcutta, an anonymous leaflet filled with scurrilous charges appears. The first charges were made in private, but these require a public investigation. Now there will be more questions, more people interviewed about Mary's behavior in Calcutta. And even if the Investigating Committee rules in her favor, will people accept her innocence? Some situations seem impossible to overcome.

As it turns out, my nemesis Reverend Hastie isn’t suggested as a member of the Consulting Committee. At least that proposal is in the open. I hold it in my hand with my copy of the Investigating Committee Report and my signed acquiescence to the new rules.
My true enemy is anonymous and slips into Scotland with a leaflet signed by “A Member of St. Andrew’s Kirk.” It is distributed to parishes across the country. The writer reveals Roman Catholics in a Scottish orphanage. It doesn’t name me directly but speaks of a Eurasian superintendent who laughs at the Church of Scotland. It charges that the orphans live in filth and that mission funds are squandered and used to entertain unbelievers. Worst of all, the writer claims the Female Mission lacks all morality. Every word is a lie.
