“No regimentals today, Colonel?” Mr. Gillan asks.
“Just an intimate gathering to celebrate Hogmanay. Mrs. Walker and her sister prepared a day of delights,” Colonel Walker says. “Come inside. The ladies are in the drawing room.”
The room is as lovely as the climate allows. The walls are whitewashed since the damp precludes wallpaper, but Mrs. Walker has put up attractive stenciling and local fabrics provide splashes of color. There’s a large mat on the floor, cane sofas and chairs with cushions.
Mr. Gillan and I give our topis to the servant.
“My dear, our guests have arrived,” Colonel Walker announces. “Gentlemen, it’s time to start the festivities. Will you have a dram of whiskey?”
