Mrs. Mullick comes to me in tears one morning. “They’re gone, Miss Pigot. My husband will be angry. I’ve looked everywhere.”
“Please sit, Mrs. Mullick. What’s missing?” I ask.
“My bangri. The gold bracelets my husband gave me when we married.” Mrs. Mullick dabs her eyes.
I call for my assistant Mrs. Ellis and tell her to go with Mrs. Mullick to search her room. “If you don’t find the bracelets, bring Bidu Grace to me.” Mrs. Ellis puts her arm around Mrs. Mullick’s shoulders and guides her out of the drawing room. Next to Mrs. Tremearne, I depend on Mrs. Ellis to keep things in order in the orphanage.
Mrs. Tremearne gives me a long look. “You think Bidu stole the jewelry.”
