Our Present Dilemma
Mr. Hastie attends his first meeting of the Corresponding Board. We're in his point of view. The topic is Mr. Robson who left his post without notice, yet still lives at Scottish College. Mr. Hastie can't understand why Miss Pigot is present. First, she's a woman. Second, she speaks up. Third, the Female Orphanage isn't part of the college. Finally, she infuriates the others with her opinions on Christian charity. On the one hand, Mr. Hastie and Mr. Steele are sticklers for rules. On the other, Miss Pigot who has no standing on the committee reminds them of Christian duty.

“Our present dilemma is that Mr. Robson resigned with immediate effect, continued to live at the College, and...”
Mr. Steele interrupts. “And failed to repay the Mission for funds expended on his behalf. As long as he stays at the College, we continue to pay his expenses. He must leave the property immediately, and we should pursue all means to collect the funds we advanced him.”
“But, Mr. Steele,” Miss Pigot breaks in, “there’s plenty of room at the College. How can you begrudge a fellow Christian our hospitality?”
Is Miss Pigot really so ignorant? Charity is for those who deserve it, not self-serving men who desert their post leaving others to pick up their work.
Mr. Steele glares at Miss Pigot in a way that makes the room seem more cramped than it already is.
