Dr. Charles turns away from me to face the nurse. “Would you care to explain?”
“I don’t like to speak ill of people,” she continues.
“And I don’t listen to gossip. Miss Pigot is a respected member of the Scottish community. What possible complaint could you have with her?”
“Doctor, Mr. Hastie. It’s her and that Mr. Wilson.” Nurse Briggs flushes. “The two of ‘em sit on the lounge with their heads together. They think I don’t notice, but how could I not? They behave as if they’re married. They speak loudly, which isn’t allowed in a sickroom. And she touches him. And they laugh. I’m going.”
