I read something else in the notes and say, “Why did ye go away muttering from Reverend Parris’s house?”
“I didna mutter. I thanked ’im fer what he gave my child.”
“And ye made no contract with the devil?”
“Nay. I swear it,” she says in a firm voice.
I turn my attention to the four girls in court—who are now quiet, listening to my questions with undivided attention.
“All of ye, look upon this slatternly woman. Is she the one who hurt ye?”
“Yes,” the one called Abigail says. “She was one of them. She’s hurt us these past two months, and even this morning.”
Elizabeth and Ann echo Abigail’s statement while Betty trembles and nods her head.
“I saw her plainly at my house,” Ann says. “And also at other times.”
“Nay,” Sarah murmurs with a panicked expression. “I never touched ’em nor thought evil of them.”
The girls start writhing and crying out again.
