This is the most astonishing scene I’ve ever witnessed.
Betty Parris, Abigail Williams, Ann Putnam, the Younger, and Elizabeth Hubbard shriek a never-ending cacophony of piercing cries as the constables escort two of the prisoners past them on the way to Ingersoll’s Ordinary until it’s their turn to be examined by the court. The girls’ bodies jerk and twist. They cry out in response to being pinched and from other tortures no one else can see.
It is most unsettling. I look at the raggedly dressed woman before me, determined she will confess her guilt and expose her evil master. Sarah Good’s eyes track everything and everyone in the meetinghouse like a feral forest creature. I’ve no doubt she serves the devil who now abandons her to face the king’s justice alone. I look at the warrant before me. Questioning the witches will not suffice; I want confessions that eliminate the need for a trial. The witches need to be executed before this contagion spreads further.
