I secure baby Thomas’s arms as he roots into my breast and latches on.
“Ouch!” I wince.
“Feeding is a challenge when their teeth come in,” Mary says in commiseration, shifting her own babe. “Fortunately, Isaac’s teeth haven’t come in yet.”
We watch our joint herd of small children running through the house and out the door.
Mary sighs. “There’s no controlling them until we strap them in the wagon later this morning. Yer Ann will miss her cousins, I’m sure.”
At once, it’s as though my heart breaks anew. My worst fears are coming true: My sister leaves today, and for the first time in my life, we’re to be separated.
