At the building site, more people than I’ve ever seen in one place swarm the area. Men work on the rafters, though they probably won’t be placed today. Other men prepare the four sides of the building so they can be raised on the morrow. Different teams of men work at each of the structure’s four corners, placing vertical posts into the sills connected to the stone floor. Master Flint walks around the site inspecting everyone’s progress, muttering that everything must be straight.
I look around for Tom and see him holding a post upright against his shoulder while others make the attachment. He grunts with exertion, his shirt stretching across his shoulders. Sweat pours down his face. When the post is straight, Tom uses a mallet to pound round wooden pegs through perfectly matched holes.
