I warm a clay tankard with hot water, swirling it around a few times before tossing the water into the fire. The flames hiss and crackle, sending sparks that nearly reach the ceiling. I grab a handful of sugar from across the table and throw it into the tankard, then add a splash of boiling water from the small kettle hanging over the fire.
“Careful ye don’t burn yerself, girl.”
