The room fell into a silence punctuated by the ticking mantel clock. Elias kissed his wife’s fingers.
“Lucy, do you believe I can sail Father’s ship and restore our fortunes?”
“With all my heart.”
Eliza started to say something, then closed her mouth when Hasket touched her shoulder.
Elias rubbed his chin. Looking after the ship will keep me busy, and if I come directly home, perhaps I won’t be tempted to engage in risky activities. Let this be my final gamble.
Elias stood and stretched out his hand to his father. “I accept your offer.”
