“He brought it on himself,” Betsey observed. “I’m not inclined to offer him assistance.”
“Elias is the heir,” Lucy blurted. “He cannot be left in this state.”
Eliza tapped her chin. “I have an idea. The only time Elias has been successful is when we sent him to Isle de France ten years ago. Since his return, he has worked with his father, but also on his own account. That’s where the problem seems to be. And the gambling, of course. And the overindulgence.
