Lucy watched her husband throw his unopened letters into the fire, his lips set in a hard line as the edges of the paper curled in the flames. If only he could burn his debts as easily as he destroys their evidence.
“They won’t disappear, Elias,” Lucy said. “Your creditors will send more invoices. If you don’t respond, they will drag you through the courts.”
Elias loosened his cravat and ran a hand through his hair.
“What would you have me do, Lucy? I’m at my wit’s end. Everyone I’ve ever done business with demands payment.”
“Then we’ll sell this house,” Lucy said with a note of desperation. “Surely, that will bring enough funds to pay your debts.”
Elias smiled bitterly. “Unfortunately, that’s not an option. My father gave us the house to live in but retained ownership. I asked him to help me, but he refused. Said he’d already done enough. How I wish I’d been born a simple farmer.”
