“January is a brutal time to travel,” Reverend Clarke observed. “Your business must be important for you to brave the elements.”
Reverend Clarke handed Elias a glass of brandy.
“Come, sit by the fire and warm yourself before we get down to business.”
Elias leaned toward the fire, cradling his glass between his palms. Slowly the fire’s warmth thawed his frozen limbs. Reverend Clarke’s study was designed to hold in heat, with heavy curtains over the windows and a thick rug on the floor.
Elias sat back in the wingback chair. “Thank you for seeing me, sir. I realize I requested this meeting on short notice, but I don’t know when I’ll next be in Boston.”
“It’s always a pleasure to meet with Miss Brown’s friends. She speaks very highly of you and enjoys your visits. My wife tells me that your visits amount to an informal courtship. Is she correct?”
