Soon a pattern of life emerged. When Geordie stayed at the house, he rose early so he could be at the counting house by ten o’clock. Some days, he returned home late in the evening. Lizzie always had a hot meal ready for him, but she didn’t wait up for his arrival, because there was no certainty he would arrive.
“You could send a note,” Lizzie suggested.
“No, I couldn’t,” Geordie replied. And that was that.
