“Do you need any help with that?” Geordie called out.
“What!” Lizzie shrieked and dropped her linen into the dirt. “How dare you sneak up on someone? Who are you?”
Geordie stepped farther into the yard.
“Get away! My husband will be home any minute.”
Husband?
“Lizzie, don’t you recognize me?”
Her hands were fisted at her sides, and her eyes were wild with fear. “No! I’m asking you to leave now before my husband arrives. He gets jealous quickly, and he’s a violent man.”
Geordie’s heart sank. He’d never considered that Lizzie might have married someone. And now they lived in the cottage he paid for. Anger quickly replaced disappointment. Geordie reached for Lizzie’s elbow.
