“I am Captain Cook, and you are?”
“Captain Nathaniel Silsbee of the American merchant ship Betsey. Your men took an American member of my crew. I want him returned.”
“Do you indeed? According to British law, every man aboard an American vessel is presumed to be a British deserter unless he can prove otherwise.”
“I vouch for him. We grew up together.”
“Proof requires documentation. Do you have any?”
“I give you my word,” Nath huffed.
“I’m sure your word is good, but documentation requires a proof of residence. Do you have any?”
“I’ve never heard of such a thing. I shall appeal to the governor.”
“By all means, but I can save you the trouble. British naval ships aren’t under his jurisdiction.”
Captain Cook stood. “And your petition for your countryman’s release is denied.”
The British captain threw his cigar into the shrubs outside the veranda and entered the bungalow.
